قُلsay لِلّذيto the one who بِصُروفِfor the vicissitudes of الدَّهرfate عَيَّرناtaunted us
وَلاand not يعارis disgraced بِهاby them فيin دَهرِهِhis lifetime بَشَرُa mortal
Tell the one who taunted us for the vicissitudes of fate:
Say to him who reproached us with the vicissitudes of fate,
no mortal is disgraced by them in his lifetime.
Yet no mortal in his time was ever free from reproach,
قَدindeed أُولِعَwas made obsessed الدهرُfate إِغراءًthrough incitement بِذيwith one possessing شَرَفٍnoble standing
هَلhas ...? عانَدَopposed الدّهرfate إِلّاexcept ماthat which لَهُit has خَطَرُworth
Fate has been incited to obsess over those of noble standing;
Fate is ever inclined to entice the noble-minded,
has fate ever opposed anything but what has worth?
Did it ever oppose any but those who dared to resist it?
وَكَمand how many عَلىupon الأَرضِthe earth مِنof خَضراءa green plant مورِقةٍleafy
مِنof ذاتِbearing زَهرٍblossoms وَأُخرىand another ماnot لَهاit has زَهَرُblossoms
And how many green, leafy plants are upon the earth,
How many a verdant meadow is there on earth,
some bearing blossoms, and others with none.
Some with flowers in bloom, while others have none,
ماwhat لاno ثِمارَfruit لَهاit has أَوor زهرَblossoms قَدindeed سَلِمتhas escaped harm
وَلَيسand not يُرجمis pelted with stones إِلّاexcept ماwhat لَهُit has ثَمَرُfruit
What has neither fruit nor blossoms has escaped harm,
Those with neither fruit nor blossom are spared,
and only what bears fruit is pelted with stones.
Only the fruitful invite stoning.
أَماdo you not ...? تَرىsee البحرَthe sea تَعلوrise فَوقَهُabove it جِيَفٌcarcasses
وَلَيسَand not يُمسِكُهاkeeps them فيin جَوفِهِits belly البحرُthe sea
Do you not see the sea, with carcasses floating upon it?
Do you not see how carrion floats atop the sea,
And the sea does not keep them in its belly.
Yet the sea does not hold it in its depths,
يُريدُseeks إِخراجَهاto cast them out إِذsince أَنّهاthat they are قَذَرٌfilth
وَيَستَقِرُّand settle بِأَقصىat the deepest part of قَعرِهِits bed الدُّررُthe pearls
It seeks to cast them out, since they are filth,
It seeks to cast out the filth that sullies it,
while pearls settle at the deepest part of its bed.
While pearls rest tranquil at its furthest bottom.
وَفيand in السّماءِthe sky نُجومٌstars ماnot لَهاthey have عَدَدٌa number
بَلindeed لَيسَnot يحصرُcan be counted مِنهاof them ماwhat يَرىsees البصرُthe eye
And in the sky are stars without number;
In the heavens are stars beyond number,
indeed, not even those the eye sees can be counted.
More than eyes can see or minds can measure,
أَخسُّهاthe lowliest of them لَمdid not يَنلهُreach it الكسفُeclipse فيin زَمَنٍany age
وَلَيسَand not يُكسفُis eclipsed إِلّاexcept الشّمسُthe sun وَالقمرُand the moon
The lowliest of them has never been touched by an eclipse,
The lowliest star has never suffered eclipse,
and only the sun and moon are eclipsed.
Only the sun and moon are subject to eclipse.
