Because of your parting, O dwellers in Najd,

My tears flowed in longing and streamed down my cheek.

And I was clothed in the robe of wasting by my remembrance

Of the dwellings of Layla al-Amiriyya or Hind.

I long for the valley where you dwell,

As thirsty mounts long for the watering place.

And I yearn for the languid breeze when it travels by night,

And though it neither quenches my burning thirst nor brings relief.

And I am stirred when a songbird sings in the spreading trees,

Reminding me of the shade of the arak tree and the laurel.

And I have a heart that melted on the morning of the departure

Of your camel-litters from me, as they urged love's riders on with song.

You departed and left behind a heart enslaved by love,

A companion to sighs, never recovering from longing.

I wept blood when your company set out,

And the camel-driver led them toward the expanse of separation.

And the day you parted I said to my patience, 'Just a moment!'

But it did not linger with me a moment after you had gone.

I question the sand dunes about your camel-litters,

Perhaps someone who stopped there will reveal some news.

And I ask the flashing lightning for news: perhaps it bears

News of you, O dwellers on the solitary mountain.

O lightning, if you pass the dwellings, be sure to convey

The greeting of one who remains, ever faithful to the pledge.

When mention of al-Udhayb and its ban trees comes to me,

I recall my visits to the water in the days when you were near.

May the outpouring of my tears water a dwelling on the slope,

And may the rain greet a fertile homestead in Najd.
