    ومثلك من يُرثى ويَرثي له مثلي

    You have taken your share of orphanhood and bereavement;

    one like you is mourned, and one like me mourns him.

    تلمسته بعدي فأدركته قبلي

    Both of us are bound, in this world, to an appointed hour;

    you sought it after me, yet reached it before me.

    I reserved my longing for my companions, not for

    my offspring, for I have neither boy nor infant.

    And I have come to bid men farewell, though I myself

    will ready my baggage tomorrow for the travelers' final destination.

    فأصبحت أبكي بعد صحبي على كلي

    My companions were part of my very self, then they departed;

    so now, with my companions gone, I weep for my whole self.

    We suffer separation from loved ones, just as

    we suffer captivity and killing at enemies' hands.

    I dwell in an abode whose contents I comprehend,

    and await another that my mind cannot encompass.

    O ambergris of the valley, you leave behind a fragrant breath

    whose scent time can neither erase nor wear away.

    And what could I find to console me for losing you,

    when he who consoles now readies himself for parting?

    I remembered my pledge to you, which none receives

    from me but the honorable and the generous among kin.

    Let this much of my tears for you and of my blood suffice:

    this watering of your love in a time of drought.

    The end of every living being is what you have reached,

    whether he makes his way there in haste or at leisure.

    And I remain among your books, finding contentment

    and remembrance in what I read from them and what I dictate.

    I keep alive the merit you leave behind,

    though, where merit is concerned, my plight is like yours.

    The world and its people have not lost their worth to me,

    though I have won from them neither word nor deed.
