1. خطبت الخطاب الفخم في المحفل الفخمِ

    وأعلنت ما تنوي وتملك من عزمِ

    You delivered the grand address at the grand assembly,

    And declared what you intend and what resolve you possess.

  2. وقلت فلم تترك مكاناً لريبة

    ولا موضعاً للظن فيك وللوهم

    You spoke, leaving no room for doubt,

    Nor room for suspicion about you or delusion.

  3. بشائر بالعقبى لواديك أطربت

    وفي كل واد ما يصمُّ وما يصمي

    Glad tidings of a good outcome for your valley brought joy,

    While in every valley there is what deafens and what strikes dead.

  4. دوت منك في جو البلاد فأفهمت

    وكان سماعُ الأكثرينَ بلا فهم

    They rang out from you through the land's air, making things clear,

    Though most had listened without understanding.

  5. وجاءتك بالنجوى وكانت تسرها

    طوائف ما هانت لغُرْمٍ ولا غنم

    And they came to you with counsel they had kept secret—

    Groups that had not bowed to loss or gain.

  6. وإن لم يُعدِّل علم ذي العلم خلقه

    فلا خير في خلق ولا خير في علم

    And if a learned man's knowledge does not improve his character,

    Then there is no good in character, nor any good in knowledge.

  7. حساب الأخ المأمون للأخ تبتغي

    بعيداً من الدعوى بريئاً من الظلم

    You seek a trusted brother's accounting with his brother,

    Far from litigation, free of injustice.

  8. وما ثأرُ خصم عند خصمٍ تريده

    ولكنه حقٌّ على القَرْم للقرم

    Nor do you seek one adversary's vengeance upon another;

    But it is a right owed by one noble chief to another.

  9. وكل تقاض واحتكام موفقٌ

    إذا لم يعالج بالضغينة والذم

    And every claim for one's due and appeal to arbitration succeeds,

    If not pursued with rancor and reproach.

  10. وحربك حرب الأنبياء تخوضها

    قوياً بلا سيف كمياً بلا سهم

    And your war is the prophets' war; you wage it

    Strong without a sword, a valiant warrior without an arrow.
