ماذاwhat استفدناhave we gained منfrom هزائمthe defeats of العدىthe enemies
ماذا استفدنا من هزائم العدى
ونحنwhile we لمdid not نمددwe stretch out إلىtoward المجدglory يداa hand
ونحن لم نمدد إلى المجد يدا
What have we gained from the enemies’ defeats,
What did we gain from defeating the enemy
When we have not stretched out a hand toward glory?
When we did not extend our hand to glory
وقدand perhaps يضرdoes harm المدبرُthe retreating one الفرّارُthe ever-fleeing one
وقد يضر المدبرُ الفرّارُ
كماjust as يضرdoes harm المقدمُthe advancing one الكرارُthe repeatedly charging one
كما يضر المقدمُ الكرارُ
And one who retreats and flees may do harm,
The retreating deserter may do harm
Just as one who advances and charges repeatedly may do harm.
Just like the insistent attacker does harm
ممالكthe kingdoms of المشرقthe East منذsince القدمِantiquity
ممالك المشرق منذ القدمِ
تعتزtake pride بالملوكin kings لاnot بالأممِin nations
تعتز بالملوك لا بالأممِ
The kingdoms of the East, since ancient times,
The eastern kingdoms since ancient times
Take pride in kings, not in nations.
Take pride in kings, not in nations
ومنand among سجاياthe traits of ملكthe king of اليابانِJapan
ومن سجايا ملك اليابانِ
غرامهhis passion بالشعرfor poetry والبيانِand eloquence
غرامه بالشعر والبيانِ
And among the traits of the king of Japan
And among the traits of the King of Japan
Is his passion for poetry and eloquence.
Is his passion for poetry and rhetoric
فمنso who لناfor us بمستبدٍّwith an autocrat عادلِjust
فمن لنا بمستبدٍّ عادلِ
يسيرhe conducts himself فيناamong us سيرةin the manner of الأوائلِthose of old
يسير فينا سيرة الأوائلِ
Who, then, will bring us a just autocrat
If only we had a just autocrat
Who conducts himself among us as those of old did,
Who would follow the ways of the predecessors
يسوقناhe drives us إلىto العلىthe heights بالرهبَهْthrough fear
يسوقنا إلى العلى بالرهبَهْ
إنif لمdoes not تسرmove بناwith us إليهاtoward them الرغبَهْdesire
إن لم تسر بنا إليها الرغبَهْ
Driving us to the heights through fear,
And take us to the heights out of awe
If desire does not carry us there?
If desire does not take us there
ياO واهبGiver of النصرvictory انصرِgrant victory to الإسلاماIslam
يا واهب النصر انصرِ الإسلاما
واجعلand make منout of الحربwar لهfor it سلاماpeace
واجعل من الحرب له سلاما
O Giver of victory, grant victory to Islam,
O Giver of Victory, give victory to Islam
And bring it peace out of war.
And turn this war into peace for it
