They say, “The two poets have died, yet you have not lamented,

though the people of the two Easts have lamented them both.”

The two assemblies did not invite me at their appointed times,

yet I, of all the companions, least need their two invitations.

Though the two friends departed this world suddenly,

they had indeed taken their shares of its bounty.

What they had entrusted to their hands had enriched them,

and what they had entrusted to their hearts had made them precious.

And at their two funerals they received reverence

in its fullest measure, as they had at their two festivals.

I have tears, through which I seek healing in their absence,

when my bearers are slow to bring me to them.

I wished that my own death had come first,

so I would not witness the two peers at their deaths.

I have kept faith with the living and the dead; equal

before me are the sorrows of both sides alike.
