    Take the emirship of poetry, O Husayn, for

    Brothers and companions have come to pledge allegiance to you.

    And claim the title that has worn out others,

    So the title may rest content with your cherished name.

    You gathered in the finest club the finest company,

    And among those you gathered were East and West.

    Had they not chosen you, they would have quarreled

    Over leadership, like political parties, and fought one another.

    ولو سألتهمُ الأموالَ لاكتتبوا

    They hastened to you with their confidences for you to read;

    Even had you asked them for money, they would have contributed.

    And they excelled in staging a grand festival and an assembly,

    Immense—and you yourself were its wondrous spectacle.

    والقول ما أولموا فيه وما أدبوا

    With blessings you attend it in gracious Ramadan;

    And words were the fare of their feasts and banquets there.

    No means remained for the pretenders to attain

    What they sought, what they wished for, and what they expected.

    And among what you undertook was putting an end to

    What they taught and deceitful desire dictated.

    وليس فيها له بيت ولا نَشب

    O you who govern a dominion and a kingdom,

    Yet there you own neither house nor property;

    And you whom followers and a retinue salute,

    And for whom a statue and a monument may be raised:

    وليتني بين من عينتَ مُنتدب

    You have let each young man among them enjoy his post;

    And would that I were a delegate among those you appointed!

    And today Dar al-Kutub is capital enough for you,

    For your two realms, and an audience hall, as is fitting.

    Who will bring me to your lofty threshold, that I may kiss it,

    While curtains and veils stand before your threshold?

    This is my share of chaos, which I have won,

    After desire had betrayed me elsewhere.

    وقد لعبتُ عسى أن ينفع اللعب

    Earnestness did me no good in word or deed;

    And I have played—perhaps play will prove useful.
