With the heat of parting and passions
صارتit became بخاراًvapor فيin الهواءthe air وإنماand yet
صارت بخاراً في الهواء وإنما
ذرّاتهاits particles تمتازare distinguished بالخفقانِby throbbing
ذرّاتها تمتاز بالخفقانِ
It became vapor in the air, and yet
It became vapor in the air, yet
Its particles are distinguished by their throbbing.
Its particles pulsate
فيwithin كلevery خافقةthrobbing particle لسانٌa tongue يشتكيlaments
في كل خافقة لسانٌ يشتكي
ألمthe pain of الفراقparting ولوعةand the anguish of الهجرانabandonment
ألم الفراق ولوعة الهجران
Within each throbbing particle, a tongue laments
In every heartbeat a tongue complains
The pain of parting and the anguish of abandonment.
The pain of separation and agony of estrangement
ياO شمسsun طالhas grown long بعادthe absence of مهجتيَmy soul التيwhich
يا شمس طال بعاد مهجتيَ التي
أكلhas devoured البلىdecay منbecause of بعدهاits absence جثمانيmy body
أكل البلى من بعدها جثماني
O sun, long has my soul been far away—
O sun how long has my soul been distant
In its absence, decay has devoured my body.
Which absence eroded my body
حلhas arrived الشتاءwinter فأشبهيso be like شمسthe sun of السماthe sky (continued)
حل الشتاء فأشبهي شمس السما
ء(completes “the sky”) وخفِّضيand lessen منsome of هذهthese النيرانfires
ء وخفِّضي من هذه النيران
Winter has come; be like the sun in the sky
Winter came so be like the sun
And lessen these fires.
And reduce these fires
فلعلso perhaps بردthe coolness of الرفقgentleness يهبطwill bring down مهجتيmy soul
فلعل برد الرفق يهبط مهجتي
منfrom جوهاits sky كالوابلlike a downpour الهتّانsteadily pouring
من جوها كالوابل الهتّان
So perhaps the coolness of gentleness will bring my soul down
Maybe the coolness of gentleness brings down my soul
From its sky, like a steady downpour.
From its atmosphere like heavy rain
وإذاand if أردتyou wish هديتهاyou will guide it الجثمانto the body فاخthen it will (continued)
وإذا أردت هديتها الجثمان فاخ
تلطتmingle (completes the split word) بهwith it وحييتand I shall live بعدafter الآنnow
تلطت به وحييت بعد الآن
And if you wish, you will guide it to the body; then it will
And if you want to give life to the body after this
Mingle with it, and I shall live from now on.
