Poets of the age, lend an ear to a brother,
O poets of this age, lend me your ears
A man of pledges, remembrance, and generosity.
Of pacts and memories and grace sincere

Indeed, my excuse for creating poetry is that
My excuse in composing verse, excuse
of a grieving man who could no longer bear his secret and spoke out.
Grievous, heart sore, secrets did lay bare

And those who walk with me this path
Aflame with longing, drinking at evening and morning.
Yearning’s revolt, bewildered snare

I have in my own soul a beloved who holds sway;
Within me a beloved so dear
He wearied my heart for his sake, then took his rest.
Whose love makes weary, rest I rare

Help, my friends—or pardon me!
Help me, friends, or pardon me
No blame falls on the weeper if he moves others to tears.
No blame’s the weeping if they weep and tear

If I have filled the East with complaint and lamentation,
If I did fill the East with plaint and moan
It is from the East that my sickness and wounds come.
From the East my troubles and all my care
