On Thursday they brought me news of my maternal uncle's death.

So I said: the nights' goodwill is gone.

After you, O Ali, can my soul find pleasure

in lofty office and abundant wealth?

Can any drink heal my torments,

when now I choke on pure water?

Time's calamities have forbidden my heart delight

and revelry with drinking companion and gazelle.

Images of death have turned my gaze,

through their terror, away from images of beauty.

And between my heart and hope now stand

admonitions that hold wide sway within it.

So I have no wish for my former days' return,

nor for the beloved's promise of union.

Wait a little, my departed uncle, wait!

For you have distressed me and occupied my thoughts.

You departed; I had not seen you for an age,

during which one state gave way to another.

Death took you unawares, and you bade no farewell,

nor gave warning of this departure.

You left the world's outward splendors, content

with your lot in those eighty long years.

You abandoned your pursuits after renouncing them,

and parted from wishes after holding them cheap.

Your bounty reached farther than the rain clouds,

and you were firmer amid calamities than the mountains.

You won over loved ones and enemies

with manners gentler than the north wind.

Whenever you judged, you ruled justly,

and separated the forbidden from the lawful.

And finer than your modesty in youth

was your dignity in middle age and old age.

After my father and mother, you were dearer

to me than my companions and all my kin.

And how many clear aims you had,

for which you strove amid blood-drinking spears.

You were indeed the one who helped me grow upright,

and my great guide toward perfection,

    teaching me archery and rhyme,

and the arts of oratory and debate.

    أسيل بهن كالسحر الحلال

    You inspired me with dazzling meanings;

with them I flowed like lawful magic.

You clarified for me the paths and pursuits,

so I attained all that had defied attainment.

Through your learning you imbued me with love of my faith,

my people, the caliph, and the crescent.

What counsels, then, have you left me,

and what pure advice and precious maxims?

And have you left me any resolve to strive,

now that my saddles have been fettered?

Can I hope to meet you in my lifetime,

    when meeting has become impossible?

Does what you find make you forget me—

that divine favor? I have not forgotten.

I have asked; had you heard, you would have pitied my sorrow,

but how far your hearing lies from my question!

My tears submitted to your loss, though rebellious,

and mourning you made them cheap, though precious.

They overflow like a swelling sea, and my breast seethes,

yet they do not quench the heat of my burning.

If my grief for you has made my eyes weep,

it has made nobility and greatness weep as well.

Yours is Paradise, where you dwell content,

as your reward; remembrance and burning grief are mine.
