O you who killed yourself, after

your right hand failed to kill her who made your life wretched.

Your dreadful death has grieved every young man

whose heart, like yours, was struck by love's arrow.

And indeed, the one who weeps for you most in sorrow

is a love-stricken man whose anguish lovers deem immense.

Yes, I shall mourn you in the verse whose voice has been dedicated

by my soul to the martyrs of the people.

How could you assault this beloved? How

cruel your heart is, O man, and how unflinching!

Does the soul reveal itself in a tyrant's violence, so we should not

weep for your youth, since you squandered its bloom?

Or was it love's frenzy, whose fury despair aroused?

And the soul cannot withstand despair's fury.

So killing her whom you loved became easy for you; how often

has a lover, bereft of reason, slain his beloved!

And what you aimed at her, missing the mark,

was fatal to your heart when you aimed it true.

You have taught the man whose wish in love eluded him

what path brings his death nearer.

Greetings to you from a lovesick man who tries to

meet your fate if he does not quench his burning thirst.
