ياO مغربWest الإسلامof Islam كيفhow غفلتyou have been heedless عنof
يا مغرب الإسلام كيف غفلت عن
غربthe West النصارىof the Christians فيin بلادthe lands المشرقِof the East
غرب النصارى في بلاد المشرقِ
O West of Islam, how have you been heedless of
O West of Islam, how could you be heedless of
the Christian West in the lands of the East?
The East of Christians in the lands of Mashriq
أنتyou الأحقmore entitled بهاto them وإنand if لمnot تستطعyou can
أنت الأحق بها وإن لم تستطع
سبقاًprecedence إليهاto them ياO ابنَson دينيof my faith فالْحَقِthen catch up
سبقاً إليها يا ابنَ ديني فالْحَقِ
You have the greater right to them; and if you cannot
You have more right to it, even if you cannot
reach them first, O son of my faith, then catch up.
Preceding to it, O son of my religion, so pursue
اخترتَyou chose منهfrom it هزلهits frivolity فأضرَّand so it harmed بيme
اخترتَ منه هزله فأضرَّ بي
واختارand it chose منيfrom me النفعwhat is useful غيرwithout مفرّقmaking distinctions
واختار مني النفع غير مفرّق
You chose its frivolity, and so it harmed me,
You have chosen from it frivolity, which harmed me
and it chose from me what was useful, making no distinction.
While it chose benefit from me without separating
وأخذتand you took عنيfrom me اللهوamusement غيرwithout محاذرfearing
وأخذت عني اللهو غير محاذر
أعقابهits consequences فاربأso hold in esteem بنفسكyourself وارفقand take care
أعقابه فاربأ بنفسك وارفق
And you took amusement from me, without fearing
And you took from me diversion without being wary
its consequences; so respect yourself, and take care.
Of its consequences, so deny yourself and be gentle
