    إليها يفرُّ المستجير ويفزع

    and vanquisher of the wicked through the might

    to which the refuge-seeker flees and turns for aid;

  4. وسلطانة البحر الذي ملء لجِّهِ

    أساطيل تحمي ما ملكتِ وتمنع

    and sovereign of the sea, whose depths are filled

    with fleets that guard and defend what you possessed;

  5. وفاتحة الأقطار شرقاً ومغرباً

    فلا يختفي عنهن للشمس مطلع

    and conqueror of lands in east and west,

    so no rising-place of the sun is hidden from them;

    for each is enamored of kingship and conquest:

    ضياء حياة كان في الأرض يسطع

    Death came to you past eighty, extinguishing

    the radiance of a life that shone upon the earth.

    nor another praying for healing and pleading.

    struck its vitals no harder than the arrow announcing your death.

    Indeed, it strove to please you through its campaigns,

    and in your name assailed its enemies and struck them.

    يُضيِّعُ من إقدامه ما يضيع

    So have its feet stood firm today, while sorrow

    lays waste to so much of its courage?

    لمن بات في الدنيا الدنية يطمع

    Indeed, this death has now become a lesson

    for whoever still covets this lowly world.
