ياO ميَّMayy كدتI nearly أضِلُّgo astray فيin
يا ميَّ كدت أضِلُّ في
كyou ضلالَthe straying of عبادworshippers of الوثنْthe idol
ك ضلالَ عباد الوثنْ
O Mayy, I nearly went astray over
you, as idol-worshippers go astray.
خافواthey feared القويَّthe mighty one فحكَّموso they gave authority to
خافوا القويَّ فحكَّمو
هhim فيin النفوسthe souls وفيand in الوطنْthe homeland
ه في النفوس وفي الوطنْ
They feared the mighty one, so they made
him ruler over souls and homeland.
عرضتdisplayed جمالَكyour beauty مقلتاtwo eyes
عرضت جمالَك مقلتا
يmy علىto فؤاديmy heart فافتتنْso it became enthralled
ي على فؤادي فافتتنْ
My two eyes displayed your beauty
to my heart, and so it was enthralled.
أناI فيin اضطرابturmoil خيفةًout of fear
أنا في اضطراب خيفةً
طوراًat times وطوراًand at times فيin سكنْrepose
طوراً وطوراً في سكنْ
I am in turmoil out of fear
at times, and at times at rest.
لوif شئتyou wished يسرتyou would make attainable المنىthe wishes
لو شئت يسرت المنى
وأبنتand you would make clear ليto me أهدىthe most rightly guiding السننْthe paths
وأبنت لي أهدى السننْ
If you wished, you would make wishes easy to attain
and show me the paths of truest guidance,
إنif لمnot تكونيyou are فتنةa temptation
إن لم تكوني فتنة
ألهوI amuse myself بهاwith it حتىuntil أجنْI go mad
ألهو بها حتى أجنْ
if you are not a temptation
with which I amuse myself until I go mad.
