O faithful free men of Egypt, peace

be upon you, with a lasting pledge and bond of honor.

You have left the prison where, for you,

the days were a tally of glorious deeds.

Return like an Indian sword honed by a polisher,

keen in resolve, and like a lion returning to its thicket.

The adversary demanded money from you as ransom,

and may lives and bodies be your ransom.

The freedom of peoples is not a commodity

    that peoples buy and sell.

And had you consented to buy it with pure gold,

these pyramids would have turned to gold.

Your release is your adversary's acknowledgment

of your right, not a pardon or a favor.

What was obstinacy has, before you, turned

to compliance on his part and surrender.

Will he now gain from you, while bargaining,

what he failed to gain before, while coercing?

And is bargaining over honor permissible, even if

a free man should spend his life in raging fire?

Enough for the struggler to pass the night with his kindness

to his kin reckoned as sins in his enemy's eyes.

Does he deny the manifest right and lay claim to

what no law or code has sanctioned,

and, with sophistry, forbid plain speech,

though all his hands have earned is unlawful?

No intercessors' pleas for you matched

the censure and blame the discerning leveled at the tyrant.

Your deliverance gladdened your companions, as though they

had returned to their homelands and settled there.

And as though the multitudes had met, brought together

in reunion, their goal and aspiration fulfilled.

What a fine reward for Egypt's people is your deliverance,

after they prayed and fasted for Egypt.

A festival for which Egypt's banners flutter,

and there are signs of another yet to follow.

The purest purposes and aspirations are those in which

blood, tears, and words are made pure.

And when souls withdraw into their faith,

pain becomes one of their pleasures.

A homeland rescued by the struggle of proud men

and the mettle of heroes will not be oppressed.

It apportioned duties among them, so evenly balanced

were their burdens, and equal were their shares.

    وإلى الكمال الدأب والإقدام

    And your country has indeed reaped some of the fruits;

and toward fulfillment: perseverance and bold action.

Right is what Heaven has decreed for you,

not what cannon and sword have decreed.

Oh, how welcome the peace at hand, followed by

a pact as the homeland wished, and concord!

Certainty brought both sides into accord,

and hatreds and illusions were dispelled.
