إن الجواد الذي يعطي ويذكر ما

إن الجواد الذي يعطي ويذكر ما

أعطى ليجعل ذا الحاجات يقصدُهُ

أعطى ليجعل ذا الحاجات يقصدُهُ

Indeed, the generous man who gives and mentions what

The generous man who gives and then recalls

he gave, to make the man in need seek him,

His gifts to make the needy come to him

لكالمتيم يشكو حبَّ فاتِنِهِ

لكالمتيم يشكو حبَّ فاتِنِهِ

إلى العذول ليدنيه فيبعدُهُ

إلى العذول ليدنيه فيبعدُهُ

is like a lovesick man lamenting his love for his enchanter

Is like the lover who complains of love

to the reproacher, to draw him near—but he drives him away.

Unto the chaste one but to repel her
