Indeed, I hear war's warnings resounding

On land and sea, in the horizons and the clouds.

And every kingdom is an adversary to another,

With the steel and flame it makes ready.

And where is your equipment for it, O people of Egypt,

When you are the target of raids and calamities?

Perhaps you have dispensed with its battalions,

With books, hollow speeches, and clamour.

You will burn in its blaze, as yesterday, though

You are neither enemies nor friends to any people.

Will you then sleep until you are roused, and see

All you hold sacred amid the remnants of captivity and plunder?

You have prolonged discord and division among yourselves,

    Over offices, titles, and ranks.

And each young man began offering his principle,

Like a market trader, between supply and demand.

And today it has become a kindness and a noble deed—

What yesterday was an occasion for rage and anger.

There is contradiction and confusion in your inclinations,

So I cannot distinguish earnestness from play.

Would that he who plans a right move followed by error

Had cleared the way, doing neither wrong nor right.

You complain of the distress financial crises bring you,

While the realm is in distress from a crisis of morals.

And whoever owes more than he possesses—

His payment in paper is like payment in gold.

Undo the chains and shackles, and seek

After deliverance, the example of the Turks and Arabs.

Indeed, the adversary has told you plainly what he concealed,

And moved from one aim concerning you to another.

And he introduced nothing new in his policy,

Except the means, the standard, and the pretext.

Nor is he accustomed, in pursuit of his aim, to fear

Any accusations or suspicions concerning it.

    I warned you, but you would not let me warn you;

So the consequences and outcome I feared came to pass.

    لعله يتحاماكم ويفتك بي

    Indeed, I dread the killing by the guest among you;

Perhaps he will steer clear of you and kill me.

May my blood bring the martyred free man to mind

For those who missed the reminder in my verse and writings.
