Indeed, despite our admiration for Japan

We are amazed by Japan,

and its rapid progress in civilization,

And its rapid progress in civilization,

ومشتهانا أن يخيب الروسُ

ومشتهانا أن يخيب الروسُ

كيلا يصيروا وهمُ الرؤوسُ

كيلا يصيروا وهمُ الرؤوسُ

and our wish that the Russians fail,

And we wish the Russians to fail,

lest they become the leaders,

Lest they become deluded.

نخاف طغيان الشعوب الصفرِ

نخاف طغيان الشعوب الصفرِ

على الشعوب البيض بعد النصرِ

على الشعوب البيض بعد النصرِ

we fear the tyranny of the yellow peoples

We fear the tyranny of the yellow peoples,

over the white peoples after victory,

كما طغوا في سالف الزمانِ

واكتسحوا مغارب البلدانِ

واكتسحوا مغارب البلدانِ

as they ran rampant in bygone times

As they tyrannized in ancient times,

and swept through the western lands.

And overwhelmed the horizons of countries.

قد يبتلينا بهمُ الديانُ

قد يبتلينا بهمُ الديانُ

وتستبي صلبانَنا الأوثانُ

وتستبي صلبانَنا الأوثانُ

The Divine Judge may test us through them,

Perhaps we will be tested by them, the religions,

and idols may take our crosses captive,

And our crosses be replaced by idols,

كما ابْتَلَى بهم بني الإسلامِ

كما ابْتَلَى بهم بني الإسلامِ

يوم أضاعوا الدين بالخصامِ

يوم أضاعوا الدين بالخصامِ

as He tested the sons of Islam through them

As the Islamic nation was tested by them,

when they squandered their faith through strife,

When they lost their religion to strife,

واستسلموا لدولة الأوهامِ

واستسلموا لدولة الأوهامِ

وغادروا النور إلى الظلامِ

وغادروا النور إلى الظلامِ

and surrendered to the reign of delusions,

And surrendered to the state of illusions,

and left the light for darkness,

And abandoned the light for the darkness,

حتى أقامو بينهم فَعَلِمُوا

حتى أقامو بينهم فَعَلِمُوا

شريعةَ الإسلام ثم أسلموا

شريعةَ الإسلام ثم أسلموا

until they settled among them and learned

Until they settled among them and they knew,

the law of Islam, then embraced Islam,

The law of Islam and then became Muslims,

وغادروا بغداد مؤمنينا

وغادروا بغداد مؤمنينا

بفضل هذا الدين معجبينا

بفضل هذا الدين معجبينا

and left Baghdad as believers,

And they left Baghdad as believers,

impressed by the excellence of this faith.

Appreciating this religion.

إنا رأينا اليوم مثل الأمسِ

في نكَدٍ وفزعٍ وبؤسِ

في نكَدٍ وفزعٍ وبؤسِ

Indeed, today we have seen the like of yesterday,

We saw today what we saw yesterday,

in hardship, terror, and misery.

Of misery, turmoil and adversity.

إن ظفر المجوس بالنصارى

إن ظفر المجوس بالنصارى

صاروا لكل مسلم أنصارا

صاروا لكل مسلم أنصارا

If the Magians triumph over the Christians,

If the Zoroastrians overcome the Christians,

they will become allies to every Muslim.

They will become supporters of every Muslim.

والمذهب الذي قضى بالفتحِ

والمذهب الذي قضى بالفتحِ

أولى لهم من آمر بالصفحِ

أولى لهم من آمر بالصفحِ

And the creed that ordained conquest

And the doctrine which brought victory,

is fitter for them than one enjoining forgiveness.

Is worthier to them than the one commanding forgiveness,

وأثبت الأديان في القلوبِ

وأثبت الأديان في القلوبِ

ما قبلته فطرة الشعوبِ

ما قبلته فطرة الشعوبِ

And the religion most firmly rooted in hearts

And confirmed religions in hearts,

is what the peoples’ innate nature accepts.

What the instinct of nations accepted,

وأين منهم دينُ زهدٍ لو جرى

وأين منهم دينُ زهدٍ لو جرى

تابِعُهُ عليه داسَهُ الورى

تابِعُهُ عليه داسَهُ الورى

And what place among them has an ascetic creed? Were

And where is the ascetic religion from them, if it prevailed,

its follower to live by it, mankind would trample him.

Its followers would trample it down.
