In what tongue shall I address you today?

And were you at a festival, I would sing.

And were you all at a mourning gathering,

For a group that had perished, I would weep and make others weep.

But it is your passions that have divided you,

So no gathering place or home was free of strife.

You fought over the world to no avail,

And neither water nor oil remained in the vessel.

And what judgment between you would you accept,

When I have brought you clear proofs and set them forth?

If I cannot win a hearing from the living,

Then this living man and the dead are alike to me.

The nights will reveal among you what you did not know,

And bring what I feared and kept concealed.

The appointed time has already drawn near to you—and who can help you

Ward off what I dreaded and guarded against?

And glory lies only in the service I render well

For my people, as I hoped and wished.

And if I possessed nothing but my lifeblood,

With it I would pay the country its due, and pay in full.
