لا أبتغي منك سوى الوفاءِ

لا أبتغي منك سوى الوفاءِ

بوعدك السابق بالجلاءِ

I seek from you nothing but fulfillment

I ask for nothing from you but loyalty

of your earlier promise to withdraw.

To your previous promise of withdrawal

أبعد ما ملكت رأس الفيلِ

أبعد ما ملكت رأس الفيلِ

أقيم في خرطومه الطويلِ

أقيم في خرطومه الطويلِ

After you have taken possession of the elephant’s head,

After possessing the head of the elephant

am I to dwell in its long trunk?

I reside in its long trunk

وبعد أن تستجمعي وتشرفي

وبعد أن تستجمعي وتشرفي

عليَّ ينجو من أذاك موقفي

عليَّ ينجو من أذاك موقفي

And after you gather your strength and loom

And after you regain and overlook me

over me, will my position escape your harm?

My stance therefrom survives

إنك لا تبغين غير الرزقِ

إنك لا تبغين غير الرزقِ

ليقتل الجوع جميع الخلقِ

ليقتل الجوع جميع الخلقِ

Indeed, you seek nothing but sustenance,

You seek nothing but sustenance

so that hunger may kill all creation.

To kill the hunger of all people

وإن ملكت جارتي حفظتُ

وإن ملكت جارتي حفظتُ

سياجَها وشأنها رفعتُ

سياجَها وشأنها رفعتُ

And if I ruled my neighbor, I would guard

And if my neighbor possessed, I protected

her fence and raise her standing.

Her fence and dignity I upheld

وإنني بأختيَ الشرقيةِ

وإنني بأختيَ الشرقيةِ

أحق من كل يد غربيةِ

أحق من كل يد غربيةِ

And as for my eastern sister, surely I

And I, for my sister the Eastern

have a stronger claim than any western hand.

More right than any Western hand
