تعوَّدَ في سبل المروءة أن يشقى
I have been true to my homelands with a devoted man's honor,
I have fulfilled the dutifulness of patriotism
who has grown used to hardship on the paths of honor.
One accustomed to the paths of dutifulness to endure misery

And surely seven ears of grain would suffice me,
And I can make do with seven scattered ears of grain
scattered, if it were sustenance I sought.
If I were seeking livelihood

وهل يضمن الميدان من ضمن السبقا
I shall strive, and hope for no safety on the course;
I will strive though I hope not for safety in the arena
and does the arena safeguard one who has secured the lead?
Does the battlefield assure one who attains precedence?

وإنwhile indeed خطوبthe tribulations of التركthe Turks أهونthe least grievous ماwhat ألقىI face
وإن خطوب الترك أهون ما ألقى
Can my mind grow calm, or my beds grow soft,
Will my mind be tranquil or my bedding soft
when the Turks' tribulations are the least of what I face?
When the misfortunes of the Turks are the easiest I face
