I find no glory in my father's piety,

or his uprightness in the path he trod,

or my grandfather's bounty—he filled the

valley with it—or the blood he shed,

to match a fair woman's testimony in

a house where the heavens lodged me:

“This man is the mightiest of poets as a dev-

-il, and the gentlest of them as an angel.”

In this, then, lies my pride, when

the wealthy man boasts of what he owns.
