ولمت وكم لام الأحبةَ شاعرُ
I complained as a bird complains of parting from its mate;
I complain as the lonely bird complains
and I reproached—how many a poet has reproached his loved ones!
And I stopped complaining as the poet stopped

And I am indeed wronged, yet I am no wrongdoer;
I am wronged but I am no wrongdoer
and I am indeed forsaken, yet I forsake no one.
I am abandoned but did not flee

and why am I not rewarded for the prose I write?
Why am I not rewarded for my prose?

while a drunkard lives in ease and a gambler makes merry,
And favors the drunkard and the gambler?

Has more right than the prosperous gloaters?

but the man you put in charge of me is petty.
But He who assigned me is wanting

Are the Jews given abundance while taking risks,
The Jews get abundance and they are treacherous
and the hired man his wage while living in fear?
The hireling gets his wages and he is cautious

I have the patience of Serbia and Bulgaria

So why did those papers settle there?
