كمhow often ادعيتمyou claimed زمانduring the time of الكأسِthe wine cup إنكمُthat you
أصبحتمُyou had become ليَfor me أنصاراًsupporters وإخواناand brothers
How often, in the days of the wine cup, you claimed that you
How often you claimed in days gone by, over cups,
had become my supporters and brothers.
That you were my supporters and brothers.
حتىuntil دهانيَbefell me كيدscheming الخصمthe foe يسلبنيrobbing me of
أمنيmy safety ويغتالنيand strikes me down treacherously ظلماًunjustly وعدواناand wantonly
Until the foe’s scheming struck me, robbing me of
Until the schemes of my enemy stole from me
my safety and striking me down treacherously, unjustly and wantonly.
My security, and unjustly sought to end me.
فقمتso I rose مستصرخاًcrying for help أرجوhoping for إعانتكمyour aid
فلمbut did not أجدI find ناصراًa supporter منكمamong you ومعواناnor a helper
So I rose, crying for help, hoping for your aid,
So I cried out, begging for your help,
but found among you neither supporter nor helper.
But found none among you to give me refuge.
فكانso was عهدكمyour pledge إفكاًa lie وأوجهكمand your faces
كأنهاas though they were الخمرwine أشكالاًin forms وألواناand colors
Your pledge proved a lie, and your faces
Your oaths were false, and your faces
seemed like wine in their forms and colors.
Were like wine in their hues when I was sober.
وساءنيand grieved me بعدafter صحويmy sobering عكسthe opposite of ماwhat امتلأتwas filled
نفسيmy soul بهwith it طرباًwith delight إذwhen كنتI was سكراناdrunk
And once sober, I was grieved by the opposite of what had filled
And I felt regret when I awoke, unlike what
my soul with delight when I was drunk.
Filled me with joy when I was drunk.
