أنthat الشبابyouth انقضىhas passed away فيon منهجthe path to الشيبِgray hair
For me and you, this suffices as knowledge and experience:
My knowledge and your knowledge from learning and experience
That youth has passed away on the path to gray hair.
Is that youth has passed in the path of old age

Worry has left us neither bodies nor strength
Worry has not left our bodies and strength
With which to strive after discipline and refinement.
For us to strive with after discipline and refinement

كماjust as نضرwe are harmed بمأكولby food ومشروبand drink
We have come to be harmed by our compassion and our pride,
We have become content with our dignity and honor
Just as we are harmed by food and drink.
As we are content with food and drink

فإنso if هممناwe resolve ظفرناwe gain بالأكاذيبwith lies
We see hopes entice us and deceive us;
We see wishes seduce and deceive us
And if we resolve to act, we gain only lies.
For if our aspirations attain lies

How deeply we yearned for a fortune once concealed;
So how we strived for a fortune that was hidden
And now it is no longer veiled from us.
And now has become unveiled to us

And had our eyes seen it in our cradle-days,
And if the eyes of our cradle days saw it
We would never have turned to anything but games.
We would not have turned to anything but toys

If the earth is devoid of what I sought,
If the land was devoid of what it threw
What use to me is journeying east and west?
How does my rising and setting benefit me

My hope and my despair have become the two causes of my death;
My hope and despair have become reasons for my death
Between the two, my smiles and frowns are all the same.
They are equal to me, whether good or bad

Two opposites: this one pushes me, while I am pulled
Two opposites, one pushes me and the other pulls me
By that one—how can anyone pushed and pulled be patient?
So neither pushed nor pulled patience remains

If I had some of the ignorance of those who laugh at
If only I had some of the ignorance of the laughing ones to
The injustice of fate, I would not grieve for the stricken.
The injustice of events, I would not grieve for the stricken

If brought close, they grow bored; or if kept away, they complain.
Whether they come near, they are bored, or go far, they blame
Alas, my bewilderment between keeping them distant and bringing them near!
And I am confused between distancing and drawing near

If my wisdom bears fruit among the people of Egypt, then I am
I am content with their greetings and welcome.
Pleased with them for compliance and acceptance

Indeed, I am indifferent to money that costs no effort
I care less for wealth without effort
On their part, and shun resentment and reproach.
For them and I distance myself from anger and reproach

He who does evil, my undeserved revenge would not be sought

I am not preoccupied with the pains of my soul
From a friend who complains of pain, distraught.
From a companion who complains, troubled by pain

One day preceded the white hairs of his eyes over mine

Listen, my brother, to a brother crying over the loss of a brother

Of faded youth, true love, beloved

One who combined within a noble soul
One who gathered in a soul noble traits
The Turks' piety with the Bedouin Arabs' openheartedness;
To piety and abstinence from wine and openness to foreigners

So that we spent the night eager and encouraged;
Until we slept satisfied and eager

One who did not seek harm to his side with injustice

And did not soften to an undefeated opponent

Wait, you who bid us farewell—life is turbulent
Wait, our farewell, and life is troubled
In the gloom of a night as fearsome as the sea's depths.
In the wings of a night, the rough sea frightened

You used to grow angry when I announced a young man's death to you;
You used to get angry when a youth was eulogized to you
But now my manner of announcing your death pleases you.
And now my manner in your prohibition pleases you

If indeed we were created for letters and honor,
If we were created for manners and generosity
Then indeed we were created for thought and torment.
Then we were also created for thought and torment

People's waywardness deepens our compassion for them;
Their ignorance increases our compassion for people
We are indeed two wonders in an age of wonders.
We are strange in an age of strangeness
