By your life, why have the Russians once again taken pity

    on a mischief-maker who schemes while terror-stricken?

So, O mountain of the rebel, O stronghold of harm,

are you impregnable against the unyielding Turks?

And indeed, what you have reinforced and mustered

is a flock for these ravening lions.

And what harm can befall a throne set firm upon a star,

if ribs burn with hatred against it?

A station such as noble virtues and generosity approve,

and a neighbor as vile as corruption could wish.

And the Turks have not wearied of staying; rather,

they abhor seeing a good deed go to waste.

So, O thirsty one who complains to the sword of burning thirst,

your thirst will be quenched when your lifeblood flows.

And O you who incite against the Turks men doomed to die if they attack,

you yourself will lie slain when the reckoning comes.

And not every day is placed at tyrants' disposal,

nor do wrongdoers have an intercessor every day.

So is there any lesson for them in what has passed?

May their devil depart, so they may obey.
