Do not think this rain can benefit

the land of Egypt by keeping drought at bay.

The water is nothing but the people's tears, made

by the intruder's tyranny to surge like the deep sea.

And thunder is nothing but the beating of hearts, and the

lightning is nothing but their blaze as they burn.

And the winds are nothing but souls, driven

from breasts by sorrows, so they race one another.

Alas, O Egypt, what remedy is there for drought,

if, when we complain of its harm, drowning overtakes us all?

This is the punishment of those who lived in their waywardness,

their ways divergent, their passions split into factions.
