God and all creation know that they

have been wronged; where is the intercessor pleading for mercy?

Will it avail, from the innocent to their foes—

a complaint—if suffering ever helps the wounded?

So draw from knowledge provision for tomorrow,

whether in their day they placated you or coerced you.

And bide your time until your spear-shaft is strengthened

after learning, by something of worth from experience.

And when your stems have grown firm, then act

with your hearts and your minds, and take command.

If I hold my own reins, I count as equal

loss in pursuit of my aims and gain.

Give no cause for gloating to people whose lies nearly

make the dearest, noblest one forget your loyalty.

Have you seen the guards before his stirrup

forming a barrier, so no Muslim can gaze toward him?

A man may become a devil, yet

what they suspected and imagined of you will not happen.

Are we the people of Caesar, or of his neighbor

Khosrow, that he should fear blood closing in around him?

Or, after feeling safe from enemies for a night,

does he deny the loyal leave to speak?

It shames us to have it said, 'They surrendered

to the usurpers,' and to have them say, 'They committed crimes.'

By God, even if they turned morning back to darkness, they would never

win his love; we are who we are, and they are who they are.

Indeed, the mountains, shaken by their own fires,

are the lightest burden the brimming heart has borne.
