I weep for you, lady of the trees, remembering

the days when joy kept me company in your shade.

How often I sheltered in it from the midday heat,

and hid from the eyes of tale-bearers,

as I stood where I met the fair women bound for

the watering places, gliding like gazelles.

What befell you from the wind's violence, that it did not

spare you? What is the secret of this helplessness? What is the cause?

How many sighs you could bear, driven

against you by my breast, blazing like a volcano!

Had my heart's passion not ended and my heart not repented,

I would have fallen like you, writhing in surrender to death.
