تخلفت عنكم والعوادي كثيرة

I have stayed away from you, with adversities so many;

I have lagged behind you, though the paths are many

my staying away was neither deliberate nor by choice.

And my lagging was not intentional, nor my choice

وأنيَ لا أدري لكم أي مذهب

وأنيَ لا أدري لكم أي مذهب

أسايركم فيه ولا أي موقف

أسايركم فيه ولا أي موقف

And I do not know which course of yours

I know not which creed of yours I should follow

I should follow you in, nor which stance.

And join you in, nor which stand I should take

ولم أبك موتى العام منكم لأنني

ولم أبك موتى العام منكم لأنني

سكبت على الأحياء دمعي وما يفي

سكبت على الأحياء دمعي وما يفي

I have not wept for this year's dead among you, for I

I did not weep for the dead of the year among you

have poured my tears over the living, and they do not suffice.

For I shed my tears on the living, which suffices

ولم أر إلا أخوةً في ديارهم

ولم أر إلا أخوةً في ديارهم

تعادوا أمام الراصد المتلقف

تعادوا أمام الراصد المتلقف

And I have seen only brothers in their own homes

I saw only brethren in their abodes

turn against one another before the watchful opportunist.

Who became enemies before the watching pickpocket

وما في اختلاف تظفرون بمصلح

وما في اختلاف تظفرون بمصلح

ولا في ائتلاف تظفرون بمنصف

ولا في ائتلاف تظفرون بمنصف

In discord you find no reformer,

You will not gain any interest from differing

nor in accord do you find anyone fair.

Nor any arbitrator from uniting

وكل فريق يطلب الحكم بالهوى

وكل فريق يطلب الحكم بالهوى

ومن يتَّبع حكم الهوى يتعسف

ومن يتَّبع حكم الهوى يتعسف

And every faction seeks power as its whims dictate;

And each group seeks to rule by whim

whoever follows the dictates of whim acts arbitrarily.

And he who follows whimsical rule is unjust

وهذا يعادي صاحب الأمر دونه

وهذا يعادي صاحب الأمر دونه

وهذا من المعزول بالعزل يشتفي

وهذا من المعزول بالعزل يشتفي

This one opposes the man who holds power instead of him;

This one is hostile to the authority without him

that one finds revenge in the ousted man's dismissal.

And that one with dismissal is appeased

وليس لكم من عدَّةٍ غير وقفة

وليس لكم من عدَّةٍ غير وقفة

على جدث أو خطبة حول مقصف

على جدث أو خطبة حول مقصف

And you have no resources beyond a vigil

You have no equipment but to stand

at a grave, or a speech at a banquet.

At a grave or deliver a speech around a cafe

وما قيمة الدستور والخلف بينكم

وما قيمة الدستور والخلف بينكم

إذا لم يجمِّع شملكم ويؤلف

إذا لم يجمِّع شملكم ويؤلف

What is the constitution worth, with discord among you,

Of what value are the constitution and successor among you

if it does not bring you together and reconcile you?

If they do not unite your ranks and reconcile?

توالت روايات الخصومة حولكم

توالت روايات الخصومة حولكم

فلم تلق إلا مرجفاً بعد مرجف

فلم تلق إلا مرجفاً بعد مرجف

Tales of strife have followed one another around you,

The narratives of discord piled around you

and you have met only rumor-monger after rumor-monger.

And you met only with more and more agitation

وجاءت أسانيد الدعاوى فلم تكن

وجاءت أسانيد الدعاوى فلم تكن

سوى شبهات في مكان مزخرف

سوى شبهات في مكان مزخرف

The supporting evidence for the claims came forth, yet it was

The chains of claims came but they were

nothing but suspicions in an ornate setting.

Merely doubts in a decorated place

أترجون أن الشعب وهو معذب

أترجون أن الشعب وهو معذب

يرحب بالمخدوع منكم ويحتفي

يرحب بالمخدوع منكم ويحتفي

Do you hope that the people, tormented as they are,

Do you hope that the people, while tormented

will welcome the deceived one among you and honor him?

Will welcome the deceived one among you and celebrate?

وتبغون إشرافاً على الشعب منكمُ

وتبغون إشرافاً على الشعب منكمُ

وأنتم أحق اليوم منه بمشرف

وأنتم أحق اليوم منه بمشرف

And you seek to place the people under your supervision,

And you want supervision over the people from among you

when today you need an overseer more than they do.

While today you most deserve a supervisor
