Carrying the jar, she walks with it,

    radiant-faced amid the crowd,

    like a red banner fastened

for a commander who set forth with a vast host.

Were it not for the neck's straight poise beneath it,

and the sway of her side and figure as she carries it,

I would have emptied it, moved to pity by its weight,

even if your family complained of burning thirst.

O Mayy, how little need you have of a jar!

If you wished, it would be in people's eyes.

And were you to make a village headman carry it,

he would gain honor and the highest station.

Perhaps with it you seek, out of compassion,

O Mayy, to quench the thirst of those parched with love.
