I lay sleepless; one like me, if he remembered, would lie sleepless.

So my heart nearly tore apart in anguish.

And I spent the night suffering through a night whose star had vanished,

Save for sparks flashing from my breast.

I would have found solace in them, but for a blaze I cannot bear

Within my heart—passion feeds it, and it scorches.

And I weep with streaming tears that cannot quench

A blaze; instead, I spent the night choking on them.

Sleeplessness I endure; no tears avail,

    Nor is a star visible, nor is the night merciful;

    Nor is sleep within reach, nor is dawn breaking;

Nor is patience within my power, nor is thought unfettered.

Nor, if I voice my sorrows, can I find my way

To someone who kindly asks how I fare.

And nothing stole my peace but my tenderness toward my homeland

And my fear for it of vultures circling overhead.

And my people sleep, heedless, though they walk

Upon the earth; if I warn them, they will not believe.

Awake! For, because of your drunkenness, Time has been

Perfecting its plot against you and carrying it out.

Do you accept a humiliation none would accept

Save one who cowers, with terror hemming him in?

Sons of the East, were it not for your ignorance and misguidance

And your weakness, no eastern land would have bowed to the West.

You have clung to ruinous things, whereas

One should cling only to the means of deliverance.

Is there no admonition for you in the voice of one like me?

Is there nothing to unsettle you in the rebuke of one like me?

I fear for you a calamity I foresee,

That will block your paths and hem you in.

Prepare a defensive stronghold against it, to preserve

Your lives from it; and do not be divided.
