أشار إليها كاتب وخطيبُ
I yearn for the abode of the caliphate whenever
a writer and an orator speak of it.

دهته النوى غير اللقاء طبيب
My burning anguish has baffled the physician; is there, for one
whom separation has stricken, any healer but reunion?

لكثرة إدبار الزمان غريب
I do complain of a land where I have lived as though I were,
with time so often turning its back, a stranger.

And many a stumble leaves no striving to rise,
and many a stumble is followed by a leap.

If the Turks face wars brought by their foes,
then my loyalty to friends brings wars upon me.

And if they have slain the Bulgarians, and after them the Greeks,
then jealousy and a beloved have slain me.
