    وملتقى الآل حولي كلُّ آمالي

    At Eid I gathered all my family around me;

And my family's gathering around me is all I hope for.

    ولستُ للقوم غيرَ العمِّ والخال

    They called me father, though I have no child among them;

I am only their paternal and maternal uncle.

With them in the house, it is as though I gaze

Through them upon diverse nations and generations.

I ready them for tomorrow, among those I shall count tomorrow

As my soldiers and my heroes upon this earth.

How lovely the gathering I cherish and witness,

    Of mothers, fathers, and children.

So may I see no separation ever divide

The settled, the fluttering, and the roaming.

Nor may a cooing dove lose its mate,

Nor the lion its thicket and cubs.

I settled in the countryside, untroubled by a tyrant

Among men, nor by a heedless man or deceiver.

And lived on fresh greens and fruit

On my own property, and on its clear-flowing water.

I forbid myself meat as sustenance, considering it

The food of a predator, a stealthy killer like the wolf.

And I would fight for peaceful living creatures—

Birds and beasts—every kind of battle.

That I never found among learned men.

From the lowly in repute, the obscure, I never met

The hurt I suffered from the famed and haughty.

My standing sank until I went unmentioned

By those who drew upon my words and deeds.

As I have guarded my pledge, at home and on my travels.

My long affliction in nerves and limbs.

It is an inconsolable ordeal to see a land

Other than my own more worthy of me and more faithful to me.

Were useful to them, they would not long abandon and neglect me.

My loved ones in subduing and humiliating me.

From it my wounds, my pains, and my shackles.

Even if I reached the utmost limit of lifespans,

I would gain nothing from years and lifespans.

As are my abundant verses and my few.

No singing upon a hill has availed,

Nor has weeping over ruins availed.

I have discerned in people what turned me away from them,

And in detachment lay my dignity and honor.

Secret designs, present in my mind and thoughts.

The guarantor of change and transformation.

You possess the world's innermost secrets,

Yet occupy no lofty place in it.

No ample room on earth is granted you

As it is granted a soothsayer and a charlatan.

From what lies before them, from what comes next?

If the living find no standing after the dead

Among them, neither the grieving nor the consoled are any good.

To its builder's sons is surely ruined and worn away.

Sovereignty rests on troops and the fortress surrounding it,

Not on fields and a river flowing through it.
