And they said, 'You have fallen silent today.' I said, 'Be patient.'

Have my excuses not reached the poets?

And what have I to do with political verse, now that

I have found the people's hearts empty of it?

And what have I to do with parties, now that

my experiences have tested the parties and the leaders?

They are all alike: this one has not treated me

kindly, nor has that one done me harm.

Should I love a faction that returns no greeting,

and shun a faction that feels no slight?

And how many a kindness of mine have the people deemed

mere meddling, and how many a right have they called a gift!

And I am content to do without what

others use for endless pride and swagger.

A raider assailed me with papers, and indeed they

are more decisive in judgment than the might of armies.

And I paid some people their due out of my blood,

but could not pay the others in full.

And my friends quarreled with me as though I were

a creditor suing debtors among them.

    فهل يتولى ما كتبت هباءَ

    And yesterday all my hand possessed vanished into dust;

so will what I have written vanish into dust?

And among this world's miseries is my being accused by those

I took as intercessors in my distress.

I wished for someone to buy my life, burden and all,

but found no profitable sale or purchase.

And nothing has harmed my verse but its lack of transmission,

whereas others are harmed by losing generous men.

Oblivion upon the art I have so often borne—

for it has been nothing but an ordeal and affliction.
