واطردت هواجس الشعوبِ

واطردت هواجس الشعوبِ

فهي إتقاء الحرب في حروبِ

And the peoples' anxieties persisted;

I dismissed the anxieties of nations

so, to avert war, they are embroiled in wars.

For they are avoiding war amidst wars

وامتنعت ملامس الصغيرِ

وامتنعت ملامس الصغيرِ

عسى ترد غارة الكبيرِ

عسى ترد غارة الكبيرِ

And the smaller one's surfaces grew unassailable,

And I refrained from touching the little ones

in hopes of repelling the greater one's raid.

So that the raid of the elder may return

فتلك ترجو نجدة الحليفَهْ

فتلك ترجو نجدة الحليفَهْ

وهذه توجس منها خيفَهْ

وهذه توجس منها خيفَهْ

So that one hopes for the ally's aid,

For the former hopes for the ally's support

while this one harbors fear of her.

And the latter suspects its fear

ما سمر الناس بأخبار الوغى

ما سمر الناس بأخبار الوغى

وحب ذي الحق وبغض من بغى

وحب ذي الحق وبغض من بغى

Neither the people's nighttime discussions of war news,

The gathering of people with news of turmoil

nor love of the one in the right and hatred of the aggressor,

And the love of the just and the hatred of the transgressor

يغنيهمُ عن انتظار العدوى

يغنيهمُ عن انتظار العدوى

إلى الجميع وامتداد البلوى

إلى الجميع وامتداد البلوى

spares them from awaiting the contagion

Does not suffice them from awaiting harm

to reach everyone, and the affliction to spread.

To everyone and the spread of afflictions
