Ali, rule has passed to you, and they have vied

for your ministry’s guidance—the parties and factions.

You called them; they answered, met, and went forth,

all confident of the goal and eager for it.

That is no banquet; rather, for them it is

provision for the struggle, with thirst quenched and hunger satisfied.

And their provision for peace and battle is what they witnessed

of private counsel in your two meeting halls, and what they heard.

You came forward while the adversary, with unyielding resolve,

was threatening the kingdom like a tyrant and seizing by force.

You sought refuge from him with the champions of the cause, not

leaving him any claim against you, nor letting one remain.

And you went on in the company of the righteous, resolved

to complete what they had begun and undertaken.

And the tyrant maneuvered with tricks, as was his habit,

but the tricks did not reach you, for you had spoken frankly to him.

He relented after his conditions had grown obstinate,

and thought that what you had resolved upon would not happen.

It is as though today, in what you discern

of his two resources, you can foresee the outcome.

    You are not the first to have endured his policy;

and today is your day: neither despair nor greed.

Shall I then see him and my people advancing together,

with room enough in the sky, as on earth?

    فما هنالِكَ متبوعٌ ولا تبع

    Each of the two sides is a ready helper to the other;

so there is neither leader nor follower there.

He takes only as much as they have taken,

and gives only as much as they have given.

He is the neighbor; yet neither they from him,

nor he from them, can find escape or refuge.

The benefits people bring one another achieve

what neither individuals nor groups can achieve.

Whoever finds no pasture in the people’s hearts

has no pasture in the people’s land.

    If the adversary brings the treaty, you will find relief in it;

and if he turns away, there is neither fear nor dismay.

And if he oversteps what the ally accepts,

then you have the means to restrain the angry one.

And you know him best while friendship endures,

and you know him best when friendship is severed.

Even if his soldiers and statesmen invaded the world,

they would neither dislodge the valley’s front nor break it.

I am the register that tallies and remembers what

stands to the reformers’ credit, and rewards them for their deeds.

So take your share of my poetry, as they have taken theirs,

for you have benefited my country as they have.
