أناI حرُّfree الفؤادthe heart والجثمانِand the body
غيرexcept أنيthat I am مقيَّدٌbound بالزمانِby time
I am free in heart and body,
I am free in spirit and body
yet I am bound by time.
Yet I am bound by time

سبْلهاtheir paths صارفاًturning إليهاtoward them عنانيmy reins
And how long shall I be shown hopes with clear
And to how many desires I see clearly
paths, as I turn my reins toward them?
Their paths to which I turn my reigns
فإذاbut when رمتI sought نيلهاto attain them اعترضتنيconfronted me
عقباتٌobstacles محجوبةhidden عنfrom عيانيmy sight
But when I seek to attain them, I am met
But when I seek to attain them
by obstacles hidden from my sight.
Obstacles arise, hidden from my sight

بزجاجby glass ممكنsolid البنيانin construction
It is as though, amid these sights, I am enclosed
As though among visions I am surrounded
by glass of solid construction.
By glass of fragile build
ولقدand indeed يصدأtarnishes الزجاجُthe glass فلاso not يبsee (first part of split verb)
صرsee (second part of split verb) شيئاًanything وراءهbeyond it الناظرانthe two eyes
And indeed the glass may tarnish, so that
And glass can rust, no longer showing
the two eyes see nothing beyond it.
What lies beyond to the seer
مثلlike أعمىa blind man يبدوappears لهto him الشيءthe thing حلماًin a dream
فيراهso he sees it بمقلةwith the eye اليقظانof one awake
Like a blind man to whom a thing appears in a dream,
Like a blind man to whom things seem like dreams
so he sees it with the eye of one awake;
Which he sees with eyes of the wakeful
فإذاthen when هبَّhe awoke عادreturned فيهin him عماهhis blindness
فبكىso he wept حسرةًin anguish منfrom الحرمانdeprivation
then, when he wakes, his blindness returns,
And when his sight returns, his blindness
and he weeps in anguish at his deprivation.
Returns, and he weeps from deprivation
