Abodes of my loved ones, my greeting be upon you.

I call, mindful of your bond—if only you heard my plea.

Yet can the deserted dwelling hear, whose

Wide spaces today have become empty of their people?

It has become desolation, save a dwelling’s trace I glimpse,

In the hands of decay, facing the wind, empty.

    وقد يشتكي الربع الضعيف العواديا

    It meets the morning rainclouds, lamenting their fierce blows;

And a feeble ruin may well lament calamities.

But I still hope that you will answer,

Perhaps I may learn where they have gone—perhaps—

In their Najd, or in Tihamah? For within me

Is a longing for them that has filled and seared my heart.

Did they willingly heed the herald of parting when he called

For them to forsake you, or did they answer the caller unwillingly?

    وطالت مناداتي وطال سؤاليا

    Answer me: long this year has been my vigil beside you;

Long my calling, and long my questioning.

My companions left me alone, pondering

Upon your sands, when they tired of my lingering stay.

So I do not guard against the scorching midday heat,

Nor the dark night with its tresses spread,

Nor the incessant downpour, drowning like the sea,

    Setting its far-spreading current upon me;

Nor the wind’s fierce gusts, which play with me upon

Their shoulders as they blow, scattering dust.

I have devoted my greetings to you, and thus

I shall spend my life among those ruins.

I weep for my loved ones with tears I have spent

To express my torments, though those tears were precious.

I ask every bird and lightning-flash about them,

And make everything before me weep for them.

My loved ones, separation has been long, and separation kills

One who, like me, keeps the covenant faithfully.

    My patient endurance used to quench some of my anguish;

And here I am, bereft of endurance over you.

Is there no news of you to quench my burning thirst?

For I find nothing else that can heal me.

    I bear a choking grief worse than the terrors of death;

I seek God’s protection for you from the evil afflicting me.

My eyes are pledged to water your abodes,

Though I find none among you who knows of it.

I called; never have people seen a caller like me,

Who strove for good and returned in tears.

In what I sought I suffered the worst obstacles,

Which every noble soul has come to suffer.

I battled them until every seeing person beheld

My struggle as a picture plain before his eyes.

Until even solid rock pitied me, and

My enemies’ hearts split at the force of my cries.

Nor, though reproachers persist, do I forget

My pledges, or cease to care for what I seek.

Nor have I left them, empty-minded and unburdened,

Nor spent the night with eyelids shut, heedless of them.

If abandoning my aims were possible,

I would have found peace of heart and safety.

But mine is a soul that seeks the heights,

Even if misery should lie in that desire.

God guided it there; and at His command

It strives; God suffices the soul as a guide.

I looked upon the world with the eye of my insight,

Until today what had been hidden stood revealed.

And I returned with grief that nearly killed my soul,

    Grim-faced, troubled in mind, complaining,

For I saw evil there exalted,

Strong among its children, ever overreaching.

They came to see another’s weakness as a warrant

To rob him of his right, within his reach.

They marched as one to strike him down, although

You might one day think some were enemies of others.

They shortened the pathways of life, but only

To reach us did they bring what was distant near.

They joined the links only to sever

Our thread of livelihood, already frail.

They strove steadfastly to seize our lands,

And none among them failed who rose and strove with patience.

Upon the ruins of our former glory they built

An impregnable station, rising beyond the stars.

They barred us from what we hope for, and diverted

From us a source of sustenance that once flowed.

We became to them like slaves, submissive,

Bondmen, fearing their violence and calamities.

They led us only to muddied water,

And sent us back from it still parched.

We see their glory filling our eyes, and yearn

To see its like among us, rising to rival it.

We sleep, neglecting what we hope for, and attain it

As a phantom passing through our sleep by night.

We delight in it until we wake, and see no

Trace of it remaining among the worlds.

Then we lament like a bereaved mother who has lost her only child,

Finding no one gentle toward us, nor anyone to console us.

This has indeed become our habit, and it is a sickness

For which ignorance will never let us find a healer.

God has cured every nation of its like,

Yet it continues spreading among us, unchanged.

But I do not despair of its cure,

And my hope in this remains strong.

Sons of the East, I call you to the finest path,

Which will restore to you life’s freshness once again.

So keep pace with the sons of the West, who modeled themselves

On your forefathers, until you attain the heights.

You have a greater right to follow your ancestors than

Foes who robbed you of your once-radiant splendor.

Does it please you that sacred things are ravished,

While they find none among you to defend their sanctuary?

And does it please you that the paths are effaced,

While we see no protector among you, sons of the East?

Yet you possess in religion a keen-edged sword,

Which blunts other keen blades when you draw it.

So revive with it the Prophet’s way, and renew

The standing of God’s religion, now grown worn.

Water it until you restore its youth

In freshness; otherwise it lives on thirsty and withered.

Enough sorrow has it suffered from your past silence

And your neglect of its cause—and enough have I.

    Make it pleased with you by following its path;

How beautiful the world when it is pleased!

Then we shall live in bliss and freshness,

Safe from the aggression of foes and nights.
