O lady whose beauty is a disguise for harm,

A physician and a craftsman lent it to you.

You give them both generously from the tormented lover’s wealth,

As recompense, until all I have gathered is gone.

Easy now: you have discovered your secret, and they have recoiled—

Those keen-cutting swords, their edges blunted.

Behold in my reproacher over you a man brimming with contentment,

And many an intercessor has returned to me angry from your presence.

You have grown used to the pains of wounds, mending

Your body until no part of it flinches.

So the mocking women have not hurt you with their reproaches

Against you, nor your enemies’ taunting, stinging though it is.

    ففيك لعشاق الظواهر خادعُ

    Leave me, and deceive another’s eye and heart;

For something in you deceives lovers of appearances.
