عبدAbd (servant) العزيزal-Aziz (the Mighty) علامwhy? تلهوyou amuse yourself بالصباwith youthful pleasures
لهوَthe amusement of المؤمِّلِone hoping for أطولَthe longest of الآجالِlifespans
Abd al-Aziz, why do you revel in youthful pleasures,
Why, Abdel Aziz, do you play with youth,
As one who hopes for the longest of lives?
While playing belongs to one with lengthened life;
وإلامَand until when? تسمعyou listen to مطربيكyour singers وقدwhile already علاhas risen
صوتthe voice النذيرof the warner بأعجلwith the most imminent الأهوالterrors
And how long will you listen to your singers, when there has already risen
And why do you listen to your singers, though
The warner's voice, announcing the most imminent terrors?
The herald's cry of swiftly coming death is loud?
فلقدfor indeed أجرتهمُyou hired them ثلاثةthree أشهرٍmonths
هلاwhy did you not? أجرتهمyou hire them ثلاثthree ليالnights
For you have hired them for three months;
For you have squandered three long months away;
Why did you not hire them for three nights?
Why were not three short nights enough for you?
