By your life, no preacher has ever drawn tears from my eyes

With greater force than this tale.

For its meaning has become a lesson to my heart,

Which melts at its memory in anguish and pain.

And I shuddered at the plight of two lovers, whose

Life in love had scarcely grown sweet before tragedy struck them.

Two gentle companions, sweeter in speech than blossoms' bounty,

    And purer in their pasture than the gazelle of the grove;

Devoted to kindness by nature and instinct,

While others did good through cultivated habit.

If they found someone in distress, they grieved for him,

And would not sleep until he was at peace and they could rest.

They never parted except to gather their sustenance,

And never came together except in praise of God.

They knew no watering place but virtue,

And knew no brimming cup but simplicity.

Content with the comfort in which they found themselves,

And seeking no prize but marriage.

And they were worthiest of it, that they might become

Two partners in life, delighting in bliss.

But soon separation came between them,

And scarcely had the two hearts joined before they were torn apart.

    وحين درتْ أُمَّاهما قَضَتا معا

    So one beloved died by drowning, and the other died of grief;

And when their two mothers learned of it, both died together.

So the island's people were saddened by what befell the

family, and they took to weeping in echoing lament.

And nothing consoled me but my certainty that they

Had received a loftier, ampler reward from the Creator.
