You sent books for children as your gift,

So the days of youth returned to me, though I am middle-aged.

Pages you wrote for the little child,

So that the child might gain from them a man's strength.

Oh, if only I were the child you guide,

So I might encounter what he encounters, and read what he reads.

And oh, if only my bygone days would return,

With their bitter and their sweet alike to me.

    And there is no good in my yesterday, my today, or tomorrow;

And I am not suited to this world, nor is it suited to me.

And if fathers vie for distinction through the offspring around them,

Then my advantage over fathers is that I have no offspring.

And fate has set me at the worst of stations,

So my life there has neither a future nor a past.
