جارُ غنيٍّ ينجد المستجيرْ
The people envy me because I am
The people envy me for having
a neighbor of a rich man who aids those seeking refuge.
A rich neighbor who helps the needy.

عنه نأى فهو الأمير الخطيرْ
O people, none is enviable except the one
O people, envy belongs to one who
who has kept far from him—he is the illustrious prince.
Is far from goodness, a dangerous prince.

هل فيكم بالأمر مثلي بصيرْ
Indeed, I am the envious one, not you.
It is I who envies, not you,
Is there among you someone as discerning in this matter as I,
Is there among you one like me, with insight?

who sees wealth spent, but not for noble aims,
Who sees wealth spent not for virtue
nor to aid a grief-stricken pauper?
Nor to help a poor man in need.

And the region's poet calls, yet no
The poet of the land calls but hears
warning is heeded save one of ruin,
Only of corruption and warning.

Like a bird lamenting the echo
in a cage beside the course of a brook.
In a cage by a flowing stream.

أبصرت من جار شقيِّ الضميرْ
O nearest of neighbors, but for you I would not
O closest of neighbors without you
have seen a neighbor so wretched at heart.
I’d not have seen a wretched hearted neighbor.
