Peace be upon you, people of Egypt, until another time.

Greetings to you, people of Egypt, for a time

The excuses of one with an ailing stomach, and the anguish of one grief-stricken.

Excuses are praised and longing is woeful

صبرت على الدائين عامين لم أدع

صبرت على الدائين عامين لم أدع

جهادي لمغصوب وناء ومسجون

جهادي لمغصوب وناء ومسجون

I endured both afflictions for two years, never abandoning

I have been patient with illnesses for two years, I have not called

my struggle for the dispossessed, those far away, and the imprisoned.

My jihad for the usurped, the suffering, and the imprisoned

سألتكمُ ستين يوماً إجازة

سألتكمُ ستين يوماً إجازة

تلمسها مني الطبيب يداويني

تلمسها مني الطبيب يداويني

I asked you for sixty days’ leave,

I asked you for sixty days of leave

which the doctor treating me requested of me.

So the doctor can treat me

فإما حياة بعدها مستريحة

فإما حياة بعدها مستريحة

وإما قنوط بعد ذلك يطويني

وإما قنوط بعد ذلك يطويني

Then either a restful life will follow,

Either I will have a restful life after it

or despair will engulf me after that.

Or despair will wrap me after that

وما بيَ إلا همُّ موفٍ لقومه

وما بيَ إلا همُّ موفٍ لقومه

بحريّة الوادي المقدس مفتون

بحريّة الوادي المقدس مفتون

And nothing ails me but the anxiety of one faithful to his people,

And I have no desire except the concern of one loyal to his people

enraptured by the freedom of the sacred valley.
