Verse scattered from the fruits of al-Muzhir,
A sea whose wave flowed forth from seas.
هذاthis هوit القاموسal-Qamus; the dictionary إلاexcept أنهthat it
هذا هو القاموس إلا أنه
هوit فيin الحقيقةtruth منof صحاحflawless specimens الجوهرthe gems
هو في الحقيقة من صحاح الجوهر
This is al-Qamus, except that
It is, in truth, made of flawless gems.
تاجcrown العرائسthe brides فيin اللغاتthe languages مفقةunclear as written; possibly 'instructive'
تاج العرائس في اللغات مفقة
مصباحa lamp ليلnight الجاهلthe ignorant one المتكبرthe arrogant one
مصباح ليل الجاهل المتكبر
The brides’ crown, instructive in languages [uncertain reading],
A lamp for the night of the arrogant ignoramus.
بلrather إنهindeed it المختارthe chosen selection منfrom ذاthis كلهall of it
بل إنه المختار من ذا كله
فاحتgave off fragrance عبارتهits phrasing بمسكwith musk اذفرstrongly fragrant
فاحت عبارته بمسك اذفر
Rather, it is a selection from all of this;
Its phrasing was fragrant with pungent musk.
تجنيreap حلاوتهits sweetness يداthe two hands of تاريخهits date; its chronogram
تجني حلاوته يدا تاريخه
حلوsweet جناyield قطفيmy gathering ثمارfruits المزهرal-Muzhir
حلو جنا قطفي ثمار المزهر
The two hands of its chronogram reap its sweetness:
Sweet is the yield of my gathering the fruits of al-Muzhir.
