The eyes flowed with tears of coral.

Do the eyes hold mines of coral?

For all the ages? Yes—my tears are gone,

And my two eyes flowed with what resembles it.

My love spares Maryam what terrified me

On the day of parting, from the bringer of sorrows.

    والفرع منها من ذوي السودان

    She is Qurayshi, O you who ask me about her lineage;

And her tresses are of the people of Sudan.

And her rounded hips come from a mighty sand dune,

And her graceful sway from a bān-tree shoot.

Chaste in her reveries, union with her is estrangement,

And her speech leads to transgression.

She gathered in my heart her malady and her cure.

Ah, for one who unites the two opposites!
