Indeed, my eyes, at the memory of a fair maiden

who turned me toward love, away from what I desire,

who draws a gray-haired man back to her youth,

while even a newborn child turns gray from it—

describing her baffled him; nay, her beauty surpassed

the powers of the eloquent, accomplished poet—

streamed with tears until I was struck

by ceaseless love-madness and intense sorrow,

long (Ṭawīl) and abundant (Wāfir), like her splendor,

and expansive (Basīṭ), complete (Kāmil), and prolonged (Madīd).

Thus, within my mind have crashed together

the seas of love, and passion grows.

    إنما الحب طارف وتليد

    Love for her is new, and from her comes the old;

love is nothing but the new and the old.

If that fair one destroys my mind,

then my passion, born of love for her, will not perish.
