على الوجد واعتياد برح المحبة

Congratulations to Majnun and ʿAzza’s lover

Congratulations to Majnun and to the honorable friend

on their yearning and their growing accustomed to love’s torment.

For fervor and habit of wandering in love’s desert

وفي الحب فقت الصاحبين في الهوى

وفي الحب فقت الصاحبين في الهوى

فيا لائمي دعني اردد زفرتي

فيا لائمي دعني اردد زفرتي

And in love I have surpassed both companions in passion.

And in love the two friends surpassed others in passion

So, you who blame me, let me repeat my sigh.

So O critic, let me repeat my sigh

فلو ذقت طعم الحب والوجد والهوى

فلو ذقت طعم الحب والوجد والهوى

وذقت بعيد الصب بعد الأحبة

وذقت بعيد الصب بعد الأحبة

For if you had tasted the flavor of love, yearning, and passion,

For if you tasted the flavor of love, fervor and passion

and tasted separation from loved ones on the lovesick lover’s feast day,

And tasted after enduring separation from the loved one

لما لمت في التذكار مجنون عامر

لما لمت في التذكار مجنون عامر

وما لمت من قومي كثير عزّة

وما لمت من قومي كثير عزّة

you would not have blamed Majnun of ʿAmir for remembering,

You would not blame Majnun when he remembers

nor would you have blamed Kuthayyir ʿAzza, one of my people.

Nor would you blame many honorable people of my tribe
