ألا إنما أرض السمار مشوقة
إذاwhen ذكرis recalled الثغرthe mouth المشعشعradiant والعطفand the body's curve
إذا ذكر الثغر المشعشع والعطف
Behold, only the land of al-Samar awakens longing
Behold, the land of dusk is alluring
When the radiant mouth and the body's curve are recalled.
When the radiant cheek and graceful neck are recalled
وإنand if ذكرتis mentioned أرضa land سواهاother than it وخرّدand bashful maidens
وإن ذكرت أرض سواها وخرّد
بأرضin a land سوىother than ساحاتهاits precincts خرجdeparts الحرفthe word
بأرض سوى ساحاتها خرج الحرف
And if another land and bashful maidens are mentioned,
And if you mention any land but it and chatter
In a land beyond its precincts, the word goes astray.
Of any land but its plains, the words miss their mark
